How Medicare Works

Medicare is federal health insurance with four parts: Part A (hospital), Part B (medical), Part C (Medicare Advantage. A private all-in-one alternative), and Part D (prescription drugs). Most people enroll at 65 and then choose either Original Medicare plus a supplement (Medigap) and Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Availability and benefit structures vary by county in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Medicare has four main parts-and choosing coverage can feel overwhelming. We explain how Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D fit together so you can review your options with confidence.

What We Review

Part A. Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health care for most people at no premium if they paid Medicare taxes.

Part B. Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment with a monthly premium.

Part C. Medicare Advantage

Private plans that replace Original Medicare and often include Part D and extra benefits like dental or vision.

Part D. Prescription Drugs

Standalone drug plans or coverage bundled in Advantage plans that help pay for retail prescriptions.

What to Know Before You Enroll

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers hospital and medical care but leaves significant out-of-pocket gaps. Most beneficiaries add either a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) or a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy plus Part D for prescriptions.

SwitchBlue helps beneficiaries across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina understand how the four parts fit together before they choose a path. At no cost and with no obligation to enroll.
