Medicare in The Villages, Florida: Sumter, Lake, and Marion Counties

The Villages spans three counties, so your Medicare plan roster follows your residential address — not the golf course, clinic, or neighbor's zip code. What Sumter, Lake, and Marion retirees should verify before enrolling.

Educational comparison only. This tool describes general carrier attributes by state. Carriers marked Appointed carrier are companies SwitchBlue can help you enroll with. Carriers marked Not appointed are reference-only — SwitchBlue has no agency relationship with them and cannot sell their plans. It does not display premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximums, or other plan-specific costs. SwitchBlue does not rank carriers or recommend one company over another. Plan availability, benefits, and costs vary by county and contract year. Confirm options for your zip code before enrolling.

Medicare in The Villages, Florida: Sumter, Lake, and Marion Counties

Start with one question before you open a carrier brochure: which county is your permanent home address in — Sumter, Lake, or Marion?

That sounds bureaucratic. In The Villages it is the whole Medicare decision. The community spans three counties. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by county and ZIP code. Two neighbors can live on the same golf-cart path, shop at the same Publix, and see doctors at The Villages Health while enrolling from completely different plan rosters.

I hear this constantly in Central Florida consultations: someone compares plans using a friend's zip code in Lady Lake, enrolls from a Sumter County address, and discovers the Marion County specialist group they assumed was covered sits on a different contract. The Villages brand is unified. Medicare's service areas are not.

This post covers the slice the statewide guides skip: three-county address rules, The Villages Health network verification, and the Advantage vs Medigap fork for retirees who live here year-round or split time. Start with Medicare Plan Finder for your county ZIP, then use our The Villages service area page and the Advantage vs Supplement wizard if you are still deciding between paths.

Does The Villages Health accept Medicare Advantage in The Villages?

The Villages Health and UF Health Central Florida may participate with select Medicare Advantage plans, but hospital participation does not prove every physician group, clinic, or specialist is in-network.

The Villages Health is the name most retirees recognize first. UF Health Central Florida, Leesburg and Ocala referrals, independent cardiology groups, imaging centers, and therapy clinics do not move as one block. A plan directory can list a facility while excluding the employed physician group, anesthesiology contract, or outpatient surgery center you actually use.

I would not enroll off a hospital logo. Search each doctor by name and practice location on the carrier directory, then call the office with the full plan name, HMO or PPO type, and 2026 contract year. Ask whether they are taking new patients under that specific plan. "We take Medicare" usually means Original Medicare, and that answer does not settle an Advantage network question.

Carrier directories also lag during Annual Enrollment Period. That is irritating, and it is normal. If your primary care doctor, cardiologist, or orthopedic group shows out-of-network online, call before you assume the directory is current. The trap here is treating The Villages like a single hospital system with one contract list. Smaller market feel, same plan-by-plan negotiation as Jacksonville or Tampa.

Are Medicare plans in Sumter, Lake, and Marion counties the same as neighboring counties?

No. Medicare Advantage and Part D availability follows the beneficiary's residential county and ZIP code.

Sumter County covers much of the southern and central Villages footprint. Lake County includes Lady Lake and parts of the community along the Lake side. Marion County picks up segments toward Ocala and the horse country corridor. You can drive ten minutes, cross a county line, and never notice the boundary — but Medicare still sells plans by the address on file with Social Security, not by which rec center feels like home.

That catches people who use a Lady Lake mailing address, live in a Sumter County village, or maintain a seasonal Florida home while claiming another state as permanent residence. It also catches spouses who share doctors but not the same county appraiser record. If your legal residence is Sumter County, compare Sumter County plans. A Lake County neighbor's recommendation is not your roster.

Neighboring counties matter for care, not for enrollment. A Sumter County retiree may see specialists in Leesburg (Lake) or Ocala (Marion). Original Medicare with a supplement usually handles cross-county Medicare providers more simply. A Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO needs network verification in each county where routine care happens, and emergency-only travel rules do not help with follow-up visits.

Use the permanent residence on file with Social Security. If you moved from one Villages village to another and the county changed, update the address first and compare again. I see people treat a short move as paperwork. Medicare treats it as a service-area event.

Should The Villages retirees choose Medicare Advantage or Medigap?

Compare Medicare Advantage against Original Medicare plus Medigap plus Part D around doctors, drugs, referrals, travel, and future underwriting.

For a retiree whose care stays inside Central Florida, Medicare Advantage deserves a real comparison. If your primary doctor, The Villages Health locations, prescriptions, and preferred pharmacy all line up in one county network, the trade-off may be acceptable. You still need to understand referrals, prior authorization, copays, and the maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Part A and B services.

Medigap plus a separate Part D plan works differently. You pay a supplement premium and a drug-plan premium, then keep broader access to Medicare providers nationwide. That can matter for Villages retirees with UF Health Gainesville referrals, adult children in another state, extended summer travel north, or a habit of getting second opinions outside the tri-county area.

I push back when someone wants a single winner. The better question is which risk bothers you more. Advantage concentrates risk inside a local network and annual plan changes. Medigap concentrates risk in the monthly premium and, after the first open-enrollment window, possible medical underwriting if you try to switch later in Florida. For statewide context on that fork, read Medicare Advantage vs. Medigap in Florida.

Run the drugs carefully. Part D and the drug side of Medicare Advantage can change what the plan costs in real life. Preferred pharmacies, prior authorization, quantity limits, and insulin or inhaler tiers can matter more than the headline premium. Medicare Plan Finder is the starting point, then the carrier formulary is the cross-check.

Decision pointMedicare Advantage in your countyOriginal Medicare + Medigap + Part D
Provider accessNetwork-based; verify The Villages Health, UF Health Central Florida, and specialists by plan IDAny provider nationwide who accepts Medicare, plus supplement terms
County issuePlan roster depends on Sumter, Lake, or Marion home ZIPMedigap is not sold by county network, but Part D still uses local pharmacy details
Travel and snowbirdsEmergency and urgent care usually travel better than routine out-of-area careMore flexible for routine care across Florida and other states
ReferralsHMO/PPO rules vary; prior authorization can applyFewer network rules; Medicare medical-necessity rules still apply
Future switchingAnnual Enrollment can change Advantage plans; moving counties may create a SEPSwitching Medigap later can require underwriting in Florida

If the comparison still feels close, map last year's actual care: doctors, labs, imaging, hospital, drugs, pharmacy, and travel. The boring list beats the glossy brochure.

Which county's Medicare plans apply if The Villages spans three counties?

The county tied to your permanent residential address controls which Medicare Advantage and Part D plans you may join.

A Villages mailing address, seasonal condo, or clinic location in another county does not change that service area. Medicare enrollment follows the permanent residence Social Security has on file — typically your driver's license state, voter registration, or the address you use for federal tax purposes.

This is the decision-fork question that splits the room. Two retirees can both say they "live in The Villages" while one enrolls from Sumter County zip 32162 and another from Lake County zip 32159. The plan counts, premiums, and network directories can differ. Copying a neighbor's choice without confirming the county is the fastest way to buy the wrong roster.

Sumter County includes much of the core Villages footprint south and central. Lake County includes Lady Lake and Villages segments on the Lake side. Marion County includes areas toward Ocala and the equestrian corridor. If you are unsure which county your parcel is in, use the Sumter, Lake, or Marion County property appraiser lookup before running Medicare Plan Finder.

Seasonal and dual-address confusion shows up here too. If Florida is your permanent Medicare residence, enroll using your Florida county address. If another state remains your permanent home, you generally shop that state's county roster even if you spend winters in The Villages. Original Medicare plus Medigap travels more easily for snowbirds, which is one reason many seasonal Central Florida residents choose that path despite higher premiums. See Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare for the nationwide access comparison.

A tri-county verification checklist before you submit anything

Do this before star ratings or dental extras distract you:

  1. Confirm Sumter, Lake, or Marion with the property appraiser — not the marketing name alone.
  2. Match the address on file with Social Security and Medicare.
  3. Run Medicare Plan Finder for that county ZIP with your full drug list.
  4. Write down every doctor, facility, pharmacy, and referral pattern — including Leesburg, Ocala, or Gainesville if those are part of your care map.
  5. Compare total exposure: premium, copays, drug tiers, referral friction, and maximum out-of-pocket — not one line item.

That sounds basic. It is also where most bad enrollments start. People compare what a neighbor bought, what a postcard says, or what worked last year in a different county. Medicare does not care that you both play pickleball at the same rec center. It cares where you live.

For broader Florida rules, read the Florida Medicare options guide. If you split time between states, pair this with moving states with Medicare before you assume a Villages address gives you Florida plan access year-round.

Key Takeaways

  • The Villages is marketed as one place, but Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are sold by county. Sumter, Lake, and Marion each have separate plan rosters even when neighbors share the same street name.
  • The Villages Health and UF Health Central Florida providers contract plan by plan. A hospital logo on a brochure does not prove your specialist group is in-network for your county's plan ID.
  • Your permanent residential address — not a Villages mailing habit, seasonal condo, or clinic location — controls which Medicare plans you may join.
  • Advantage can fit a retiree with a tight local network; Medigap plus Part D can fit snowbirds, Gainesville referrals, or anyone who wants broader provider access without HMO friction.
